Until 1874, the Cathedral was the tallest church in the world. Its tower dominates the Strasbourg skyline. The ground on which this magnificent edifice stands has been used for religious purposes for over 3000 years.
In 12 B.C. a Roman sanctuary was built there with shrines to at least three gods. When Christianity arrived in the region, a temple to the Virgin Mary was built over the ruins of the sanctuary. From the belfry, the view is wonderful. Strasbourg lays at your feet: an old city of tiled triangular rooftops and gable windows, interrupted by towers and churches as picturesque as those of any cities in Flanders. This wonderful and huge Cathedral is a must-see on any trip to Strasbourg.
