American Cemetery Normandy Detailed Description

In this guided tour, you will visit the American Cemetery Normandy with a local guide and furthermore learn about the history of the D-Day, June 6th, 1944.

The memorial built in the American Cemetery Normandy lists the names of 1,557 Americans who lost their lives in the Normandy campaign but could not be located and/or identified.

You will also see a 22-foot bronze statue: The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves. It is a monumental sculpture in the center of the Normandy Memorial at the American Cemetery Normandy.

Even though the story behind each grave is a sad one, the sacrifice of all deserves to be recognized. Some of them are well-known, such as the three Medal of Honor recipients, three generals (including General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.), the two Niland brothers (the basis for the movie “Saving Private Ryan”), and the Ollie Reed father and son duo.
