About the Eiffel Tower

eiffel tower

The Eiffel Tower is the most iconic monument of Paris. It was built between 1887 and 1889 and opened on the 31st March 1889.

The construction only lasted 2 years, 2 months and 5 days. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 “World Exhibition”, which was to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution.

Originally, The Eiffel Tower was supposed to be destroyed after that fair!

On the Eiffel Tower, all around the 1st floor platform, Gustave Eiffel engraved the names of 72 scientists, engineers or industrialists who honored France from 1789 to 1889. They are all painted in gold!

With around 7 million visitors a year, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous monument of Paris, after Notre Dame Cathedral. Called the Iron Lady, its record attendance was in 2014 with 7.097.302 visitors.

Nowadays we can count more than twenty replicas of the tower in the World.

With its 324 m. / 1062 ft. high, it remained the world’s highest monument for 41 years. You can climb its 704 staircases to the 2nd floor, or use one of the lifts to get to the top!

The Eiffel Tower weighs 10.100 tons and has 120 antennas.
